WORLD SCIENTISTS - GMO LETTER

Open Letter from World Scientists to All Governments Concerning Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)

  • The scientists are extremely concerned about the hazards of GMOs to biodiversity, food safety, human and animal health, and demand a moratorium on environmental releases in accordance with the precautionary principle.
  • They are opposed to GM crops that will intensify corporate monopoly, exacerbate inequality and prevent the essential shift to sustainable agriculture that can provide food security and health around the world.
  • They call for a ban on patents of life-forms and living processes which threaten food security, sanction biopiracy of indigenous knowledge and genetic resources and violate basic human rights and dignity.
  • They want more support on research and development of non-corporate, sustainable agriculture that can benefit family farmers all over the world.
Previous versions of this letter were submitted to many governments and international forums including:
  • World Trade Organization Conference in Seattle (November 30 – Dec. 2, 1999)
  • UN Biosafety Protocol Meeting in Montreal (24 – 28, Jan. 2000)
  • UN Commission on Sustainable Development Conference on Sustainable Agriculture in New York (April 24-May 5, 2000)
  • UN Convention on Biological Diversity Conference in Nairobi (May 16-24, 2000)
  • United States Congress (29 June, 2000)
Signed by 828 scientists from 84 different countries:

Guidelines for Buying Non-GMO

Though California’s Prop. 37 failed I extend my gratitude and sincere thanks to California for publicizing the dangers of GMO. Had this passed, it would have proved a source of great blessing to humanity and put an end to this eugenics agenda that masks poison as “food.”

Note: You can download this pdf file created by the Center for Food Safety that provides guidelines for buying non-GMO foods in your local stores. This tells you what you can eat that is not GMO contaminated.  ~G

In addition, should you want more info concerning GMO products and the companies producing them, please take a look at this excellent list put together by Stephanie Ladwig-Cooper on Facebook.

We CAN Win This-GMO Game Over

The battle against genetically modified organisms being secretly engineered into our foods now has only one possible outcome: Victory for the People... and defeat of the corporate quack scientists and the outrageously dishonest and sinister biotech industry that has shoved GMO down our throats for a decade or more.

In terms of victory, I'm not just talking about Proposition 37, although that could very well be a turning point that accelerates the consumer victory. But even if Proposition 37 doesn't pass, the end of the line for hidden GMOs in our food is fast approaching. The word is out. People are getting informed. There's absolutely no going back to the era of "GMO ignorance," and the truth about GMOs causing cancer, infertility, organ damage and other deadly health problems is circulating everywhere.

Even Whole Foods is now teaching its own employees more details about GMO so that they can better answer customer's questions about GMO.

GMO labeling laws are in the planning stages in several states across the country, and Rep. Dennis Kucinich has already introduced a national GMO labeling law called the Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act, or H.R. 6635.

Monsanto is on the run from activists. Honest doctors and scientists everywhere are waking up and speaking out against GMO. Food retailers like Green PolkaDot Box have already abandoned GMO and they now run an online store that's virtually free of all genetically modified products.

And what's really fascinating is that both organics-loving progressives and liberty-loving conservatives are loudly speaking out against GMOs for all the same reasons!

Progressives, conservatives, libertarians... everybody wants to stop foods from being secretly formulated with deadly GMO

Think about it: What other issue has the widespread support of churches, environmentalists, health experts, food gurus, farmers and natural health consumers? Only the issue of GMO.

Our victory against the scourge of GMO is now inevitable. We have passed the tipping point of consumer awareness that Jeffrey Smith has long been advocating.

The "No on 37" campaign can only resort to lies now. They can't debate the facts on GMO. Their dishonest advertisements in California dare not even mention the term "genetic engineering!" They have desperately and pathetically turned to a campaign of obfuscation and confusion because they simply have no defense against a commonsense GMO labeling law.

GMOs should be labeled just like fats, sugars, proteins, calories and ingredients. It's basic common sense... and everybody knows it.

High sales of GMO based entirely on ignorance

GMOs are an industry based entirely on ignorance. GMOs are the only product whose retail success is based entirely on the fact that consumers had no idea they were buying them.

GMOs are the only products that people ACCIDENTALLY purchase!

Think about it:

• Nobody actively goes to the grocery store and seeks out foods with GMOs in them.

• No food company declares "Now, made with GMO!" on the label of any product they make.

• No grocery store advertises, "We sell GMO in our store!"

GMOs are only purchased accidentally by consumers. Nobody buys them on purpose. They buy them out of ignorance. And when that ignorance is transformed into knowledge, nobody wants to eat GMO!

Especially not when it's killing the rats and giving them massive cancer tumors like the ones shown here:

Oh, and by the way, the top ten companies funneling money into the campaign to defeat Proposition 37, the GMO labeling law, are all pesticide manufacturers! Click here to see the list for yourself.

Awareness is the solution; Resistance is victory

Because GMOs only succeed through consumer ignorance, education is the most effective solution to stopping GMO. Once people become aware of the truth about genetically engineered ingredients, the scam is over. The deception comes to an abrupt end. The era of eating poison in your breakfast cereal collapses.

That's why the single most important thing you can do right now to help defeat Monsanto and the GMO / biotech industry is spread the word about GMO. Tell everyone you know! And keep reminding them until they truly get it.

GMOs are poison! That's why they kill rats and cause horrifying cancer tumors, infertility, organ damage and premature death. Those are scientific statements, not merely opinions or emotional reactions. This is really happening. There really is poison in the food.

Action items to help defeat GMO

If you're looking for other things you can do to join in this victory against poisonous genetically engineered foods, here are some action items:

• Visit the GMO article page on Natural News. This page is updated each time we publish a new article on GMO.

Join in the national phone bank to call CA registered voters and help educate them about GMOs and Proposition 37.

• Share popular GMO videos such as A Rat's Tale, What Is A GMO?, or even my recent children's song and music video, Just Label It -- a great song for kids, they love singing it!

• Make a donation to the YES on 37 campaign in California.

• Read up on GMOs at the Institute for Responsible Technology, GM Watch or the Organic Consumers Association.

• Watch the highly informative Genetic Roulette Movie produced by Jeffrey Smith.

• Most importantly, stop buying GMOs! This means stop buying all non-organic groceries containing corn, soy, canola or cottonseed oil. Look for USDA Organic, because organic foods are not allowed to be made with GMO.

Share this article, too, because this message of ultimate victory needs to be heard across the industry. We need to stay on this issue and see it through, friends. We can win this!

AOFD- Agent Orange Food Disorder

"Chronic care management" means someone has a disorder or a disease and the doctors and hospitals aren't really helping to cure it, they just treat the symptoms with pharmaceuticals and wait for it to get worse. U.S. chronic care management is a well-planned out healthcare system based on the sobering fact that most people make themselves sick and diseased by what they eat and drink, and the popular medicine used to treat this sickness is made from the same chemicals found in what causes it. Still, fewer than 30 percent of the country understands this, and even fewer than that are doing anything about it.

Agent Orange Food Disorder, AOFD, is an ongoing mutation of cells from consuming pesticide regularly, in other words, it is the cumulative effect of consuming toxins over time. This type of cancer is not contagious and is not inherited, rather it is created inside the body and perpetuated, until it's often too late to defeat, or so "chronic care management" would have you believe.

Big question: Exactly WHEN does this non-contagious, non-inherited "disorder" of the cells begin, so modern science can really find that cure? The answer to this question is complicated, but explainable. First of all, asking a doctor, an oncologist, or a nutritionist, "When does cancer start?" is like asking someone to tell you exactly when they fell asleep. They don't know. Nobody knows exactly when or where in the body cancer starts. Doctors simply don't know.

There's a more intriguing question to consider: How long will people believe that the U.S. government, the FDA, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), the entire pharmaceutical industry, and all those so well-promoted "walk for the cure" events keep conning people into believing they are searching for the cure? Let me tell you something now, no organization searches for the cure for something they are perpetuating; that would be stupid on their part. They do just the opposite without ever saying so. Plus, if any money actually does go to research, it goes to pay scientists to look for a magic vaccine to cure Agent Orange Food Disorder (PESTICIDE DISEASE), which is coming from the pesticide-laden foods you've been eating and keep eating, all while they continue searching, searching, searching "for the cure!" Yeah right.

AOFD is a mutation of cells from consuming pesticide regularly

GMO food delivers a small amount of Agent Orange ingredients into your blood and mutates your cells over time. How long that mutation of cells takes to overwhelm one of your vital organs, or strangulate your lungs or your brain, well, that's just a matter of how much of it you eat, how often, and for how long. The genetically-modified vegetable contains herbicides that kills so-called super-weeds, which is linked to the notorious "Agent Orange" used in Vietnam. (http://www.cbsnews.com)

If you don't know already, Agent Orange was a defoliant used in Vietnam to decimate the Southeast Asian jungles so the enemy couldn't hide. Because of the ingredient "2,4-D's" links to Agent Orange, people have dubbed the GMO corn as "Agent Orange corn," but that's just the beginning of the cancer breeding madness. (http://www.sott.net) Most of the U.S. soldiers who hiked through Agent Orange came home to the U.S. with cancer, and they didn't even know it. Now, most Americans are "walking" through the same nightmare by consuming GMO foods. What is the cure? Understand this; there is no starting point for AOFD, only an end. People must use their common sense to beat cancer. Put it this way, would you spray a little "Raid" roach killer on your food if it made it taste better? What if "RAID FOOD" was a little cheaper than organic food, would you buy that instead? Wake up and smell the bug killer!

Let's follow the 100 YEAR CANCER BREEDING historical time line:

Dow Chemical: The infamous Herbert Dow failed several times before finding the formula for cancer causing food. There are many years of corruption when it comes to pesticide laden food, but Dow and Monsanto are the reigning devils. Here's a MASSIVE list of Dow Chemical's violations, the same company the International Olympic Committee deemed "a proud Olympic partner:" (http://athletesagainstdowchemical.wordpress.com) Dow Chemical also manufacturers Bisphenol-A (BPA), the chemical used in plastics that leads to infertility, breast and prostate cancer, diabetes, thyroid malfunction, miscarriages and Down syndrome.

After Dow Chemical, we saw the true beginning of GMOs and insecticide use on humans by Hitler's "right arm" of the German uprising, I.G. Farben: (http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Dow_Chemical_Company)

I.G. Farben's "Business With Disease." Interessengemeinschaft Farben, or IG Farben, was a powerful cartel of BASF, Bayer, Hoechst, and other German chemical and pharmaceutical companies. IG Farben was the single largest donor to the election campaign of Adolph Hitler. I.G. Farben created chlorine gas for Hitler to use on humans in WWI. In 1915, German troops began dispersing chlorine gas from tens of thousands of cylinders at the front lines of the enemy and in the trenches. They first used it against French and Canadian troops. The types of chemical weapons employed ranged from mustard gas to lethal agents like phosgene and chlorine.

The most effective and efficient technique developed for killing the Jews at Auschwitz depended on the same pesticide that was used to kill the lice in prisoners' clothing. Thanks to I.G. Farben, the disinfectant, sold under the trade name of Zyklon B, was in plentiful supply. (http://www.pbs.org/auschwitz/40-45/killing/) Hitler killed about three million Jews with pesticide. How many innocent people has Agent Orange food killed? Since cancer in the U.S. kills about 750 thousand people per year, you might start referring to agricultural biotechnology as the modern day Nazi SS.

Monsanto is the "wicked witch" of agricultural biotechnology. In 2010, the company reported sales of approximately $10.5 billion and had over 27,000 employees. This monstrous company produces biotechnology and the horror toxin of the cancer epidemic called Roundup. Other Monsanto products include the now ubiquitous PCBs, DDT, Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH) and Aspartame. Monsanto is one of the "Big Six" biotech corporations, along with BASF, Bayer, Dow Chemical Company, Dupont, and Syngenta. Starting to sound familiar? Yes, we are talking about Nazi scientists working for American corporations and breeding cancer in vegetables. (http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Monsanto)

Vietnam's Agent Orange and Roundup: Monsanto's deadly legacy. August of 2011 marked 50 years since Agent Orange was first used by the U.S. military in its war against Vietnam, and its effects persist to this day, with three generations of exposed Vietnamese families and American veterans suffering from horrific birth defects and disabilities. Of course, Monsanto and Dow profited greatly from its production and use, but are not responsible for reparations for the millions it crippled with disabilities and birth defects. Instead, Monsanto and Dow continue to profit from their poisons. Today, they are currently seeking approval for genetically modified crops that can withstand massive doses of 2,4-D, the major chemical agent used in Agent Orange.

Monsanto's best-selling herbicide RoundUp causes birth defects. A new generation of babies born near fields of "RoundUp Ready" (genetically modified) soy in Argentina are suffering birth defects as terrible as those found in the Agent Orange contaminated areas of Vietnam. Roundup, the most widely used herbicide in the world, causes endocrine disruption, damage to reproductive organs and to DNA, and it causes cancer. (http://www.organicconsumers.org/bytes/ob281.htm)

The GMO wars

What do GMO, Zyklon B, RoundUp, Pesticide, Glyphosate, 2,4-D, Dimethylphthalate, and "Raid" Ant & Roach Killer have in common? They all kill bugs, weeds, rats and humans, but still most Americans have NO IDEA just how pervasive genetically-modified organisms (GMO) have become throughout the food supply, especially in GMO corn, soy, cottonseed oil and canola oil. So called "inert" ingredients can kill you! (http://www.getipm.com/government/ny-inert.htm)

Predatory marketing practices by multinational biotechnology companies like Monsanto effectively seize the reigns of agriculture and dictate how it will proceed. Check it out:
We are currently experiencing the GMO wars, where one biotech giant sues another for control. Monsanto is suing DuPont and vice versa, over patents and anti-competitive business practices, to see who will dominate the world's toxic food supply and benefit the most from AOFD (cancer causing food and chemotherapy treatment). (http://www.naturalnews.com)

GMO foods, pesticide, and chemotherapy are cooked up by the same handful of companies, who all have the same dual agenda: MAKE MONEY AND MAKE PEOPLE SICK. These companies run the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries of America, and they don't just feed Americans these toxins, they export them to countries all over the world. Continents are bombarded with exported contaminated vegetables which are simply molecular-twisted chem-food. Many countries are just starting to figure it out now, thanks to French researchers blowing the whistle over the past few weeks. (http://www.naturalnews.com)

Will people figure out cancer is mainly caused by eating chemicals, or will they get fooled for another generation or two, and serve their kids and grandkids Agent Orange food? Do you think there will be a pill or vaccine for that same cancer then? Do you still believe there will be a drug people can take for a few weeks or months that will reverse all those warped cells back to normal, and fight off the pesticide that you may still be eating? Will everything return to normal in your body, like it was before you began regularly eating what killed thousands of Vietnamese families, children, and U.S. soldiers in Vietnam? (http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_23429.cfm)

I feel horrible for people suffering from cancer. As of now, only about 50 percent will survive it, unless they learn about organic food (http://www.forksoverknives.com/). I feel bad for the people who have cancer now and don't know it. I also feel bad for people who don't know how to cure themselves.

There is a cure for cancer. Oh, you didn't know? Stop eating GMO, pesticide-laden food. Stop eating processed food. Stop drinking fluoridated water. Start drinking spring water (http://www.findaspring.com/). Change your ways! Start eating organic food. Only eat certified organic food. Try Superfoods! (http://store.naturalnews.com/) Question everything and read the labels on every product you buy, including what you put on your skin.

You can stop eating GMOs now or die of cancer later, it is YOUR CHOICE! Do you still want to "march for the cure?" March down your block and hand out brochures about organic food and spring water. You can even wear pink if you want to and I promise not to call the "pink" police. http://www.naturalnews.com/033783_Komen_for_the_Cure_pinkwashing.html

Germany Decides Genetically-Modified Foods Are Not Welcome

German chemicals giant BASF is closing its biotech division in Germany. The move was prompted by massive resistance to genetically modified food among both the public and politicians. GM opponents are jubilant, while some researchers are complaining this is another case of German hostility to technology.

Banning GMOs from Boulder

In the fairytale Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack sells everything he owns — one cow — for a handful of magic beans. It works out for Jack. He takes on the Giant, wins, and returns home to a happy mother (though she may not send him to market again responsible for the sale of their only livestock).

The story that unfolds in the documentary Bitter Seeds, featured at the Boulder International Film Festival, is about farmers who wager it all on what are promised to be miracle seeds, but land dust and failed crops rather than a magic bean pole. Their ending is far more grim.

A quarter of a million farmers in India have committed suicide in the last 16 years, according to Bitter Seeds. This equates to one farmer killing himself every 30 minutes, all because the miracle cotton seeds they were sold with the promise they would increase yield drove them into debt and failed to produce an ample return. In this tale, the giant they faced is GMO seed producer Monsanto, and they lost.

Historically, Indian farmers have cultivated their own seeds each year. However, when genetically modified seeds were introduced into the market after the World Trade Organization forced India to open its doors to foreign seed companies, things changed. According to Bitter Seeds, directed by Micha X. Peled, Indian farmers were told that, although the seeds are exorbitantly priced, they would produce double the farmers’ normal yield and resist pests. The farmers were not told that the seeds required large amounts of water rarely found in India.

Farmers sought loans from the bank or, when that option failed, signed over their land for a loan from illegal moneylenders who charge extremely high interest rates. They were left relying heavily on a high yield of crops in order to keep their land, and when the crop failed, as it so often did because of lack of water, the farmers had nothing to keep them going.

The film is included in BIFF’s Call 2 Action program, which aims to bring global issues home with local action points, and will be introduced by Mary VonBreck, the campaign manager of GMO Free Boulder. An informational discussion, hosted by the director and GMO Free Boulder, will be held after the film.

“This is a heartbreaking film,” VonBreck says. “When I saw it, I knew this was such an important issue to raise awareness on. I knew we were doing important work.”

There are three parts to the call to action, VonBreck says. First, the group wants citizens to be very vocal at their grocery stores by asking what foods contain GMOs. The belief is that vocalization of these concerns will lead to the second part, which is labeling foods that contain GMOs.

“The first two come under something consumers can use to take a stand on the human rights issues behind GMOs,” VonBreck says. “I mean, how can you boycott something if it isn’t labeled?” The final part of the call to action is banning GMOs from Boulder.

“Monsanto has already started pulling out of Europe because they have labeling for their GMOs,” VonBreck says. “The labeling makes it so no one buys their products, so there isn’t a market over there. It is time for us to do the same. We have got to push it through.”

Mark Retzloff, co-founder of Alfalfa’s, is joining the call to action with a new program in his store that will identify which products could have GMOs.

“[Labeling] is absolutely the right thing for people to be doing,” Retzloff says. “When you have surveys that show 85 to 90 percent of people want their products labeled, then retailers need to listen. Alfalfa’s wants to see that done.”

“Here is a documentary that shows what is really happening because of GMOs,” VonBreck says. “It is time to make a stand against them.”

Bitter Seeds will be shown at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17 at the Boulder Theater. The informational session will be held after the film in a tent on Pearl Street Mall in front of the County Courthouse.

“Boulder is special because we have a very proactive community, and we don’t want GMOs,” Retzloff says. “What we do is something other people in the country could do. Our actions could set an example for others.”

Monsanto blocks research on GMO safety

Soybeans, corn, cotton and canola — most of the acres planted in these crops in the United States are genetically altered. “Transgenic” seeds can save farmers time and reduce the use of some insecticides, but herbicide use is higher, and respected experts argue that some genetically engineered crops may also pose serious health and environmental risks. Also, the benefits of genetically engineered crops may be overstated.

We don’t have the complete picture. That’s no accident. Multibillion-dollar agricultural corporations, including Monsanto and Syngenta, have restricted independent research on their genetically engineered crops. They have often refused to provide independent scientists with seeds, or they’ve set restrictive conditions that severely limit research options.

When Monsanto won a Supreme Court case last year allowing deregulation of their GMO Alfalfa, David Snively, Monsanto’s senior vice president and general counsel, called the decision “important for every American farmer, not just alfalfa growers.”

Physicians calling for a moratorium on GM foods

On May 19th, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM) called on “Physicians to educate their patients, the medical community, and the public to avoid GM (genetically modified) foods when possible and provide educational materials concerning GM foods and health risks.”

They called for a moratorium on GM foods, long-term independent studies, and labeling. AAEM’s position paper stated, “Several animal studies indicate serious health risks associated with GM food,” including infertility, immune problems, accelerated aging, insulin regulation, and changes in major organs and the gastrointestinal system.

They conclude, “There is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects. There is causation,” as defined by recognized scientific criteria. “The strength of association and consistency between GM foods and disease is confirmed in several animal studies.”

More and more doctors are already prescribing GM-free diets. Dr. Amy Dean, a Michigan internal medicine specialist, and board member of AAEM says, “I strongly recommend patients eat strictly non-genetically modified foods.” Ohio allergist Dr. John Boyles says “I used to test for soy allergies all the time, but now that soy is genetically engineered, it is so dangerous that I tell people never to eat it.”
Dr. Jennifer Armstrong, President of AAEM, says, “Physicians are probably seeing the effects in their patients, but need to know how to ask the right questions.” World renowned biologist Pushpa M. Bhargava goes one step further. After reviewing more than 600 scientific journals, he concludes that genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are a major contributor to the sharply deteriorating health of Americans.

Pregnant women and babies at great risk

Among the population, biologist David Schubert of the Salk Institute warns that “children are the most likely to be adversely effected by toxins and other dietary problems” related to GM foods. He says without adequate studies, the children become “the experimental animals.”[2]

The experience of actual GM-fed experimental animals is scary. When GM soy was fed to female rats, most of their babies died within three weeks—compared to a 10% death rate among the control group fed natural soy.[3] The GM-fed babies were also smaller, and later had problems getting pregnant.[4]

When male rats were fed GM soy, their testicles actually changed color—from the normal pink to dark blue.[5] Mice fed GM soy had altered young sperm.[6] Even the embryos of GM fed parent mice had significant changes in their DNA.[7] Mice fed GM corn in an Austrian government study had fewer babies, which were also smaller than normal.[8]

Reproductive problems also plague livestock. Investigations in the state of Haryana, India revealed that most buffalo that ate GM cottonseed had complications such as premature deliveries, abortions, infertility, and prolapsed uteruses. Many calves died. In the US, about two dozen farmers reported thousands of pigs became sterile after consuming certain GM corn varieties. Some had false pregnancies; others gave birth to bags of water. Cows and bulls also became infertile when fed the same corn.[9]

In the US population, the incidence of low birth weight babies, infertility, and infant mortality are all escalating.

USDA Scientist Reveals All

Glyphosate Hazards to Crops, Soils, Animals, and Consumers

In less than an hour, Don Huber, professor emeritus at Purdue University and USDA senior scientist (see Box) delivered to the UK Houses of Parliament a damning indictment of glyphosate agriculture as a most serious threat to the environment, livestock, and human health [1].
Don Huber

Don Huber, Emeritus Professor at Purdue University and senior scientist on USDA’s National Plant Disease Recovery System, has been a plant physiologist and pathologist for over 40 years. His academic career began with 8 years as a cereal pathologist at the University of Idaho, and the next 35 years at Purdue University where he specialised in soil-borne disease control, physiology of disease, and microbial ecology. For the past 20 years, he has conducted extensive research into the effects of glyphosate on crops, in response to the increase in crop diseases on glyphosate-applied fields.

Since his letter to the US Secretary of State Tom Vilsak was leaked in February 2011, there has been a great deal of controversy over what Huber described as a pathogen “new to science” and abundant in glyphosate-tolerant GM crops (see [2] Emergency! Pathogen New to Science Found in Roundup Ready GM Crops?, SiS 50). As he concluded in the letter: “We are now seeing an unprecedented trend of increasing plant and animal diseases and disorders. This pathogen may be instrumental to understanding and solving this problem”.

His talk linked glyphosate to reduced nutrient availability in plants, increasing plant diseases, the emergence of a new pathogen, animal illness and possible effects on human health (see [3, 4] Glyphosate Tolerant Crops Bring Death and Disease, Scientists Reveal Glyphosate Poisons Crops and Soil, SiS 47).
Pathogen new to science

The conversion of US agriculture to monochemical herbicide practice has resulted in the extensive use of glyphosate herbicides. Coincidentally, farmers have been witnessing deterioration in the health of corn, soybean, wheat and other crops, and epidemics of diseases in small grain crops. All are associated with the extensive use of glyphosate, which has increased further since the introduction of glyphosate-tolerant, Roundup Ready (RR) crops.

Glyphosate immobilises nutrients required to maintain plant health and resistance to disease. This weakening of the plants defence could explain the infestation of GM crops with the new pathogen, which has now been observed in horse, sheep, pigs, cows, chicken, multiple animal tissues including reproductive parts (semen, amniotic fluid), manure, soil, eggs, milk, as well as the common fungal pathogen that is currently infesting RR crops, Fusarium solani fsp glycines mycelium. All are coming into contact with glyphosate either through direct exposure or consumption through animal feed. It is also highly abundant in crops suffering from plant Goss’ wilt and sudden death syndrome.

The pathogen can be cultured in the lab, and has been isolated from livestock foetal tissue, replicated in the lab and re-introduced back into the animals. It appears to be very common and may well be interacting with the effects of glyphosate on both plants and animals, exacerbating disease and causing reproductive failure in livestock (see below). Although great expectations have been placed on Huber to publish his findings, he insists that before this can be done, further resources are necessary to be able to characterise the ‘entity’ and identify what type of species it is, including sequencing of its genome. This is a slow process and once complete, it is his intention to publish the work in a peer-reviewed journal.
Understanding glyphosate’s mode of action

Recognising glyphosate’s mechanism of action is the key to understanding how it may exert detrimental effects on the health of crops, animals, and the environment alike. Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum herbicide that interacts with a range of physiological processes in the plant and its environment. Although it is most commonly recognised to work through inhibition of the plant enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) involved in the production of aromatic amino acids in the shikimate pathway, it was actually first patented as a strong metal-chelator that binds to metals including manganese, magnesium, iron, nickel, zinc and calcium, many of which are important micronutrients acting as co-factors for plant enzymes in different physiological processes including the plants’ defence system. Indeed, it is actually through chelation of manganese that the EPSPS enzyme is inhibited.

Rendering plants more susceptible to disease through glyphosate’s pathogenic activity is actually the way it exerts its herbicidal activity. This is done not just through immobilising nutrients in the plant but also impacting the agricultural system as a whole. Consistently, if glyphosate does not reach the root of a plant or the plant is grown in a sterile soil, the plant is not killed.

Once in the soil, glyphosate is later immobilised through the chelation of cations, and is therefore very stable and not easily degraded. However, phosphorus (including phosphorus fertilisers) can desorb the herbicide, making it active once again in the soil.
